Carlos Alcaraz announced his arrival on the tennis scene on Friday, upsetting World No.3 Stefanos Tsitsipas on Arthur Ashe Stadium in the third round of the 2021 US Open.
Already viewed as a potential Top 10 player, the World No.55 impressed thousands with his style of play, grit and relentless spirit. This has of course drawn many comparisons to Spanish legend Rafael Nadal, with several viewing the 18-year old as the Spaniard's successor.
Seven-time Grand Slam champion Mats Wilander is among those who has seen the similarities between both players, going as far as stating that both men had the same explosive forehand power at the same age.
“Well first of all, technically – I’ve got to mention the forehand. His arm at 18 years old is so explosive, it’s like Rafa Nadal when he was 18 years old – the same strength," Wilander told Eurosport. "But then the two-handed backhand is unbelievably solid, he can stay cross court all day.
"And then he’s smart, because he went down the line with the backhand at times. And then, he’s got good hands – he threw in drop shots which put Tsitsipas completely off."
The Swede also identified areas of Alcaraz's game that could use some work, pointing out that the Spaniard was yet to reach his full potential with his serve.
"The only worry I have is his serve. I know at 18 we shouldn’t look into the serve too much," added Wilander. “But technically, I would like to see it a little bit smoother. And I think he needs to work on the serve, I’m sure he will. And I think he has the dream of being number one in the world. Well I’m telling you, this kid – yes, and it is very possible.”
