Daniil Medvedev became just the second man to win the Nitto
ATP Finals after losing all his matches on his debut, brushing aside all opposition to claim the season-ending title last year in London as the event shifts to a new location this year.
The Russian was in impeccable form during the tournament, following his first title of the season at the Rolex Paris Masters. Prior to his victory in Paris however, Medvedev had an average match-win record of 18-10 with no championship match appearances.
“I for sure have some problems sometimes, especially when I’m not playing good,” Medvedev said. “I can lose my temper sometimes. I didn’t have one final… and it gets into your mind.”
The 24-year old excels at frustrating his opponents with his unorthodox groundstrokes, however it seemed to have no effect during the bulk of the 2020 season.
“Tennis is not an easy sport. It’s tough to explain some things that are happening... When you are down, you need to find the best way to get up fast,” Medvedev said. “I just wanted to show that I’m capable of playing good tennis and beating good guys.”
Nonetheless, the 2019 US Open runner-up rediscovered his from as he went on a blistering run to end the season, claiming his third overall Masters 1000 title in Paris and his first ATP Finals trophy in London a few weeks later.
“It’s been an amazing two weeks,” Medvedev said the morning after his London triumph. “Especially considering the results I was showing before.”
