Jordan Thompson has sealed a maiden ATP Tour title doing it the hard way this week at the
Los Cabos Open defeating Casper Ruud finally 6-3, 7-6 (4) to claim the biggest win of his career on Saturday night. The victory in Thompson's third tour level final capped off an incredible week.
Thompson played for 12 hours across five matches and included many narrow great escapes. He saved match point in a comeback win from 6-0, 3-0 down against Alex Michelsen and also had an incredible three hour 40 minute win over Alexander Zverev in the semi's which finished past 1`am on Saturday morning. He then had to return to play potentially three matches with both Thompson and Ruud in the semi's of the doubles.
"I spent so many hours on the court this week. In the quarter-final I could have been double bageled, I could have been losing 6-0, 6-0. And now I'm about to lift the trophy, so I think it's still a miracle," Thompson said post-match.
During the final, he was sublime against Ruud with true craft and variety. He mixed in short and deep slices and in particular at the net, he won 18/22 points and was too good for the Norwegian. He also had to survive adversity like he has all tournament saving 11 out of 13 break points, while converting on all three of his break chances. He will also move up to a career high of World No.32 after a landmark run.
It has been a good few months for Thompson who has reached multiple Quarter-Finals on the tour and the semi-finals in Brisbane where he defeated Rafael Nadal and now he is an ATP champion.
