Andy Murray is out of the 2023
US Open after losing out to
Grigor Dimitrov who prevailed in shorter fashion than his marathon win over Alex Molcan.
Dimitrov sealed it 6-3, 6-4, 6-1 and now faces the winner of Alexander Zverev and Daniel Altmaier in the third round.
The start of the tie saw 45 minutes for the opening few games with one game in particular lasting 16 minutes with six deuces overall as Murray prevailed to make the scores 2-1 to Dimitrov.
After a shot of the year contender from Murray, he held after a 14-minute game this time for 2-2. But Dimitrov edged ahead from there saving a break point for 3-2. It then reverted to a simple hold apiece for 3-4. Dimitrov then made it 5-3 as Murray gifted him the game with a spate of errors. That was the set for Dimitrov as he made it 6-3.
It was looking bleak for Murray with Dimitrov going 2-0 and 4-2 up. Murray showed more fight making it 4-3 but couldn't get the break he needed as a calm and composed Dimitrov went two sets up.
It was a similar tale in the final game but more emphatic for Dimitrov who saved break points at 3-1 up to head half way to the finishing line. He then surrendered another break as Dimitrov broke again with Murray sending a forehand long at 30-30 before netting with his backhand.
The writing was firmly on the wall as Dimitrov sewed it up 6-1 in two hours and 48 minutes. It was not to be this time for Murray as he followed up a supreme Moutet win with an emphatic loss.
