Nick Kyrgios has demanded the dismissal of an umpire after a shocking call took place at the
Estoril Open on Friday. The Aussie called it a 'disgrace' and said Christian Rask should be fired.
The match between
Nuno Borges and Cristian Garin hit controversy as a fan shouted out during 2-3 on a shot from Garin that landed on the baseline. Borges paused puzzled and returned the ball and Garin hit it wide. But the umpire handed the point to the Chilean instead of allowing a replay.
This lead to Borges' objection and asking for the supervisor. Despite all of this and getting the supervisor involved, the umpire's decision stood and was a pivotal moment in the context of the match. Many weren't happy including Nick Kyrgios.
"This umpire should be fired and never be able to take place in another match. Disgrace," Kyrgios wrote.
"He[Nuno Borges] stopped the point. I stopped too. I don’t know if it’s my point or if we should replay it. Need to check it. I will check it later. The atmosphere was crazy after that and I’m very proud of myself. It was kind of annoying during the match…" the Chilean said as stated by Jose Morgado.
But Garin's choice of words also came under fire from the Aussie. "How could you possibly say you won that point? Just because he stops moving doesn’t mean he stopped the point? Best case a replay. YOU MISSED THE BALL IN THE TRAM LINE, how can you win that point?," seethed Kyrgios.
