Kei Nishikori announced yesterday that he is going to skip the rest of the season due to the shoulder injury he sustained at the French Open.

It has been quite a few tough months for Kei Nishikori. He missed the US Open due to a coronavirus bout only narrowly missing the deadline. When he finally defeated the coronavirus his form on the court greatly suffered and he was not able to string together several good matches. Then he took part in the French Open and there he sustained yet another injury, this time to his shoulder. It happened during a match against Stefano Travaglia that finished in five sets. After that, he skipped all events that were being held with the last being Erst Bank Open in Vienna.
Just hours before the match against Thiem Nishikori pulled out of the event due to the nagging shoulder injury. Now he announced that he won't play any more matches this year. He said:
“I have decided to finish my year." He further explained:
“My shoulder is still bothering me a little bit so I have now decided to skip Paris and Sofia and put my full focus on 2021. This is obviously an important year coming up. Thank you for all your support and see you soon.”
Its another blow for the unfortunate Japanese player but with the season at its end its probably a smart decision to focus on next year. A similar thing was done by Federer much earlier in the season. We look forward to seeing them both back on the courts in 2021.
