Serbia’s legendary tennis star
Novak Djokovic is set for a
massive drop in ATP rankings after a disappointing outing in the
US Open 2024.
The 37-year-old is regarded as the greatest player in the history of men’s
tennis in the singles category in the Open era, having won as many as 24 Grand
Slam titles.
Djokovic suffered a shocking exit from the fourth and final
Grand Slam of the year as he lost to Australia’s Alexei Popyrin with a score of
6-4, 6-4, 2-6, 6-4. With that defeat, the Belgrade-born star is now set to face
a massive drop in the ATP rankings. As things stand, he is placed in the second
spot in the ATP rankings with 7,460 points. However, with that defeat, he is
now set to lose as many as 2,000 rating points.
That development will push Djokovic to at least fourth position.
That he can only maintain if Russia’s Daniil Medvedev does not have a great
outing in the competition. The current world number five is less than 400 rating
points behind Djokovic and is still very much alive in the US Open. He has
booked his place in the third round after beating Fabian Marozsan in straight
sets with a score of 6-3, 6-2, 7-6.
It was the first time in seven years that Djokovic has failed to lift a single major title. He was knocked out from the Australian Open in the
semifinal, where he lost to current world number one Italy’s Jannik Sinner with
a score of 6-1, 6-2, 6-7, 6-3. At the Roland Garros, the current world number
two was forced to withdraw from the mega-event just before the start of the
quarterfinal against Norway’s Casper Ruud because of a knee injury. At Wimbledon,
Djokovic lost in the final to Alcaraz in straight sets with a score of 6-2,
6-2, 7-6.
