The 2024
Madrid Open will feature not only a new format for the doubles event, but also some intriguing teams as traditionally singles players pair up to compete for doubles glory. Also in the
Olympic Games?
Americans
Ben Shelton and
Taylor Fritz will be competing as a team at the 2024 Madrid Open men's doubles event. This could foreshadow the compatriots teaming together to represent the United States at the upcoming Paris Olympic Games this summer. The tennis event will be held on the clay courts of Roland Garrod, adding more fuel to the fire that both men are getting used to playing together.
New set of rules to govern doubles event in Madrid
The new, albeit experimental format will see 32 teams battle it out for the doubles title. Previously, the event has only seen 16 teams based on their PIF ATP Doubles ranking. However, this year's edition will see 13 active ATP singles players compete alongside a top 50 men's doubles player on tour.
Additionally, players will follow a reduced shot clock system, allowing 15 seconds following points lasting up to three shots and 25 seconds for points that last more than three shots. Furthermore, the first changeover time between sets has been eliminated. Players will be allotted 60 seconds after the end of a game and 90 seconds following the completion of a set.
