The
Atlanta Open is set to take place between July 24-30 with a heavy American contingent set to play the first hard court tournament technically on the run to the US Open.
As ever, TennisUpToDate will
preview the action with the main talking points covered as the ATP Tour shifts to Atlanta on the same week as Hamburg and Umag in Europe which are on red clay.
American trio Fritz, Shelton and Eubanks headline stacked line-up
Many players who are in action this week will only stop playing another tournament over night on Sunday. That being the Ultimate Tennis Showdown in Los Angeles.
Taylor Fritz and
Ben Shelton in particular as well as
Gael Monfils are also in the final four.
But they will now head from the fun of UTS to the hard grind again of the ATP Tour albeit having a few days of good competition.
Gael Monfils in particular has not played since before Wimbledon. But he will open up against Thanasi Kokkinakis in one of the popcorn ties. The winner faces Alex de Minaur.
It could be Fritz facing Yibing Wu who is also in the last four in UTS. He opens up against Corentin Moutet.
Kei Nishikori also makes his first appearance in a long while on the ATP Tour after playing mainly challengers. He faces Jordan Thompson to open up.
Ugo Humbert, Yoshihito Nishioka, John Isner, one of the stars of Newport in Alex Michelsen and Brandon Nakashima are also involved.
Christopher Eubanks will make his first appearance since his ground breaking Wimbledon run. He didn't get a wildcard despite being on home soil. He only got in due to a late withdrawal.
But none the less he will begin likely a few months of fanfare back in the US against Andres Martin who received a wildcard for this week.
