Davis Cup's quarterfinal dream spoilt for Great Britain

A record crowd turnover was not enough for the Great Britain side, which crashed out of the race for a spot in the quarterfinal of the Davis Cup. The team-based competition is moving towards a conclusion, and the remaining teams are giving their all to secure the ultimate prize.

On Sunday, Great Britain was left embarrassed as they crashed out of the competition after losing to Canada with a score of 2-1. That embarrassment occurred in front of a record crowd of 15,700, more than Wimbledon’s Centre Court capacity.

The winning side, which cemented its place in the quarterfinal after winning all three ties, emerged victorious in both singles category contests against the Great Britain team. First, it was Denis Shapovalov, who defeated Dan Evans in straight sets with a score of 6-0, 7-5. The 25-year-old ended up producing 19 winners, 10 more than Evans. He went on to produce six aces, four more than the British tennis star.

In the other singles category contest, it was Felix Auger Aliassime who came out on top against Britain’s Jack Draper in straight sets with a score of 7-6, 7-5. In that contest, Auger Aliassime produced 25 winners, 10 more than his opponent. He produced eight aces as well. In comparison, Draper produced seven aces.

The only contest in which Great Britain emerged victorious was the doubles event. The pair of Henry Patten and Neal Skupski defeated the pair of Gabriel Diallo and Alexis Galarneau in straight sets with a score of 7-6, 6-4. The winning pair committed 18 unforced errors in the match, seven fewer than their opponent. Previously, Great Britain also lost to Argentina with a score of 2-1.

The second team to qualify for the quarterfinal was Argentina. They defeated Finland in their last encounter with a score of 3-0 in their last outing. Before that, Argentina defeated Great Britain with a score of 2-1 as well.
