The 20-time Major champion
Roger Federer is practicing in Dubai, doing his best to overcome a knee injury and show up at the new season's first Major event in Melbourne in February.
The 39-year-old Swiss played only one tournament in 2020, reaching the
Australian Open semi-final and skipping the rest of the year following two knee surgeries in February and May. Federer started to train in October, spending more time on the practice court and hoping to get ready for the Australian Open. Federer and his coach Ivan Ljubicic are currently in Dubai, testing the Swiss' level and drawing conclusions ahead of the Melbourne trip's big decision.
Greg Rusedski believes that Roger Federer won't be the title contender at the Australian Open and
Roland Garros, assuming that the obstacles will be too tough for Roger's current level and after such a long break. Like many others, Rusedski is convinced that Federer will seek his A-game at
Wimbledon and the Olympic Games, setting those events as his main goals in 2021.
"Roger spends more and more time on the practice court, increasing the training pace. I'm curious to see how much he can push in the upcoming months. I think he has one more year left in his legs, possibly two, but not more than that. Thus, Wimbledon and the Olympic Games should be his prime targets in 2021. I can't see him winning the Australian Open or Roland Garros; those asks will be too big for him. He can play well at both Majors but can't conquer the title," Greg Rusedski said.
Federer won six Autralian Open titles, between 2004-2018, lifting his last Major trophy so far three years ago. On the other hand, his only Roland Garros triumph came in 2009, beating Robin Soderling en route to a Career Grand Slam.
