Casper Ruud shared a story about Toni Nadal and how he explained the current depht in tennis admitting that even his nephew Rafael Nadal needs to perfect on clay.
A few years Nadal dominated clay like no other and Toni Nadal wasn't particularly worried about any of his matches. He expected a rather easy win for Nadal and that's what happened most of the time. These times it's a bit different as Nadal is both older and also because the field is much stronger than it was a few years ago.
A lot more players play really good tennis and the depth in general is much better making it hard for everyone including Rafa. Ruud thinks it's a good thing overall.
“He said early in Rafa’s career, he knew he’d win 6-2, 6-2 bc he was too good for the opponent. Now, even for Rafa on clay he needs to be on top of his game every match..”
