Daniil Medvedev has set his sights on the number one ranking but doing so this year seems impossible according to Medvedev himself.
Daniil Medvedev achieved a huge milestone for his career at the 2021 US Open by winning and the Russian has set his sights towards the number one ranking. The difference is over 1000 points and that seems like a tough proposition with the season entering its final stages. Speaking on that Medvedev said:
“Honestly, it seems almost impossible to me. I have to defend my titles, [in Paris] and at the [ATP Finals]. [Djokovic] doesn’t have a lot of points to defend, I think.”
Medvedev has a point because the Russian is defending a lot of points in the remainder of the season. Djokovic on the other hand is not and he should be able to hold on to his ranking by simply having solid results at the biggest events remaining the calendar.
Thinking out loud Medvedev also added:
“What remains [of the calendar]?. Indian Wells, [Paris], Turin (ATP Finals) and Vienna. Vienna, I will not play, because it is the week of St. Petersburg. I
don’t think I’ll go to St Petersburg either but if I play somewhere
that week it will be [there]."
He summed up:
“So there are Indian Wells, Paris and Turin left. If I win all three I might be in the game, but it’s still a huge challenge.”
