Mats Wilander would like to see a poetic end for the era of the big 3 where Djokovic, Nadal and Federer each have 20 grand slams.
Novak Djokovic,
Rafael Nadal and
Roger Federer each have 20 grand slam wins currently and Mats Wilander would like to see them end that way. It's would be a poetic end for the greatest era of tennis there has been and it would be an interesting fact for any conversation regarding who is the greatest of those three. Reflecting on the US Open defeat of Djokovic he said:
"Obviously, Novak Djokovic had a huge load of pressure on his shoulders. That tension turned out to be much more burdensome than most people imagined. At the same time, it is possible to identify two positive aspects of this missed Grand Slam. The first is that the Next Gen is
now ready to take the baton."
He continued:
"The second good news is that Nole will want to take revenge. I think he will take a few weeks off in order to recharge his batteries and digest the defeat. Then he will return to training as an animal in the coming months and will try to establish himself again in Melbourne. For him, it will be a new beginning."
Wilander also admitted that he would like to see them end with the current number of slams:
"I almost hope that Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic finish their careers with 20 Grand Slams each. That would be really cool! Now it is a very possible eventuality. If you think about it, it is the ideal time for the final handover to take place.
