Former tennis analyst Mark Petchey has rejected claims of a
critic that Italy’s Jannik Sinner looks uninterested in playing the sport.
The 22-year-old is often regarded as one of the most
highly-rated player currently playing in the men’s singles category along side
Spain’s Carlos Alcaraz.
Sinner recently once again lived up to the hype as he won
the ATP 1000 event — the Miami Open — after defeating Bulgaria’s Grigor Dimitrov
in the final in straight sets with a score of 6-3, 6-1.
Petchey was recently quoted in a report where he rejected a critic’s
claim that the current world number two looks rather uninterested while playing
the sport.
"We spend 5 years eulogizing (rightly so) over Roger
handing out smoke shows like Jannik did this week,” he said. “I for one am
absolutely mesmerized by how good he is and how he plays. Only going to get
better and a more all court player.”
Sinner, talking to the media after the event, stated how he
was very proud of his achievement, especially with how he managed to deal with
the pressure.
"I'm really proud obviously about the result," said
Sinner. "Today's performance was really, really good. I'm just proud of
how I handled the situation. It was not easy, so it was a very, very good two
weeks.
"I just try to improve... And also enjoying the moment.
This is a special moment. You never know if this is the last time or not. So
you have to enjoy this for one day. Let's see how I will play from now on. But
for sure, the hard-court season until now has been very good.”
