Greece’s tennis star Stefanos Tsitsipas believes that the scene has changed in the recent past with the arrival of young players like Spain’s Carlos Alcaraz and Italy’s Jannik Sinner.
The world number five is rated amongst the best male players currently playing in the circuit but has never managed to win a Grand Slam in his career.
Tsitsipas was recently quoted in a report where he stated that things have changed with the arrival of young players but remains optimistic about winning a major tournament and becoming the world number one.
“There was a gap, roughly between 2018 & 2020,” he said. “Before Carlos Alcaraz, Jannik Sinner, & Holger Rune. Then, all the spotlight was on me, Zverev, & Dominic Thiem. Now the scene has changed. We're not so young anymore. Young players have tremendous energy, thirst, & no fear. They play freely & don't think about anything.
“A Grand Slam title & world number one? It's something I think about a lot, but it's not everything. I was addicted to the sport as a kid & it took something away from me. This does not mean I am satisfied with what I have accomplished. I want to improve as a player. But the key for me is balance between personal life, building something with someone, & growing your career with the help of that person.”
Tsitsipas had a difficult end to the season where he suffered back-to-back early exits in the last two Grand Slams.
In Wimbledon, he was knocked out from the fourth round after suffering a defeat to America’s Christopher Eubanks with a score of 3-6, 7-6, 3-6, 6-4, 6-4.
In the US Open, he crashed out after suffering a defeat in the second round to Switzerland’s Dominic Stricker in a five-set thriller with a score of 7-5, 6-7, 6-7, 7-6, 6-3.
