Montenegrin Prime Minister Dritan Abazovic has announced
that he plans to give Serbia’s
Novak Djokovic the passport of his country.
The current world number two usually spends his summers in Montenegro
in order to get a much-needed break from tennis activities.
The country’s Prime Minister Abazovic was quoted in a report
where he stated that he plans to give Djokovic Montenegro’s passport.
“There is no pressure here, it is a matter of will, he is
equally welcome without it,” he said. “And not only him, but anyone who really
deserves and can be a promoter, among other things, of our country of
Montenegro. He’s a big fan of Montenegro, he often stays there, is there
anything better than to be visited by people on whom we have an undivided
opinion?
“Around which it is easy to animate others to follow their
example, even if it is unattainable. In general, I think that sports help us a
lot to overcome some of the difficulties we have, political or economic, in a
much easier way.
“My full support to people who are a global brand. They are
not only a brand of Serbia, nor of Montenegro, they are a global brand. I think
they have equal respect in the Philippines, in the USA, in Africa and of course
in the countries they come from.”
Djokovic is currently taking part in the
US Open 2023 where
he has already booked his place in the fourth round after defeating fellow
Serbian Laslo Djere in the round of 32 clash with a score of 4-6, 4-6, 6-1,
6-1, 6-3.
The Belgrade-born will be hoping to go all the way this time
around in New York where he has not won a title since 2018.
Djokovic missed the
last year’s event due to Covid-19 vaccination protocols and he lost the
final in 2021 to Russia’s Daniil Medvedev in straight sets with a score of 6–4,
6–4, 6–4.
