A curious
incident disrupted the US Open when an unexpected squirrel invaded the court
during an exciting women's doubles match.
Belgian
tennis players Greet Minnen and Yanina Wickmayer were in the midst of the
second round of women's doubles against the 12th seed duo of
Laura Siegemund
and
Vera Zvonareva.
In the
second-round clash, the Belgian pair gained an advantage in the tie-break of
the first set and were battling in the second set, with their opponents serving
at 1-2, 15-30. Following Zvonareva's serve, the chair umpire interrupted the
point due to the intrusion of a squirrel onto the court.
To the
surprise of both players and spectators, the squirrel attempted to exit the
court for several seconds before successfully making its escape, allowing
Zvonareva to resume her service for a replay of the point.
