The first week is almost over at the 2023
US Open, with Day Six upon us. The
schedule has now been confirmed with the Last 16 to be set after Saturday evening.
As ever TennisUpToDate will
preview the action with a closer look at Head to Head records and main talking points during the upcoming ties.
Alcaraz-Evans starts proceedings on Arthur Ashe
Up first on Arthur Ashe Stadium is
Carlos Alcaraz. The Spaniard will face Dan Evans. A match that the Brit promised to make interesting and not walk over to the status now of the defending champion.
His head to head record though says anything but will happen as he has lost the last two fairly comprehensively. 6-2, 6-2 in Barcelona earlier this year and back in 2021 on the Indoor Hard of Vienna 6-4, 6-3 when Alcaraz was just starting to pick up steam.
Since then, Evans has won his biggest title on the surface so could prove more interesting opposition and as Novak Djokovic v Laslo Djere proved last night, the potential is always there for something weird to happen.
Svitolina v Pegula takes centre stage
But the main match which will take Centre Stage second up sees
Elina Svitolina face
Jessica Pegula. It has been the summer of Svitolina with the Ukrainian since return making the Quarter-Finals of every Grand Slam.
She has also somewhat defied logic by providing form again so soon after being in a boot on her foot. Now standing in her way is one of the favourites for the title and a real home hope.
That being Jessica Pegula. Going into their clash, the American will harness the crowd support and a 3-1 Head to Head record.
She won their recent meeting from a set down in Washington to reach the semi-finals and all others came in 2021. Pegula has spoken kindly of Svitolina in the run-up to their clash, but all of that will stop as they battle for a spot in the Last 16.
Sabalenka, Jabeur, Medvedev and Zverev all in action
Also in action include the likes of Ons Jabeur who plays third up against Marie Bouzkova who continues to provide solid form and join her compatriots in Karolina Muchova and Marketa Vondrousova in particular as forerunners at the top of the sport.
Then it is the turn of
Daniil Medvedev last up to face a danger man in the form of Sebastian Baez who only won his last title last week and has been one of the most in-form players on the ATP Tour this season.
Over on Grandstand, it is the turn of
Aryna Sabalenka. She will face Clara Burel. While other clashes include Stan Wawrinka - Jannik Sinner and what is bound to be a marathon as Alexander Zverev faces Grigor Dimitrov.
The aforementioned Marketa Vondrousova will play in the night slot facing Ekaterina Alexandrova.
