Taylor Fritz emerged victorious from a grueling five-set battle against
Gabriel Diallo, once again having to dig deep to advance at
Wimbledon. The American faced a formidable challenge from the world No. 40, battling for over three hours to secure a 3-6, 6-3, 7-6(0), 4-6, 6-3 victory.
The world No. 5 extends his grass-court winning streak to six matches—after claiming his fourth Eastbourne Open title last week—and reaches the Wimbledon third round for the fourth time in the last five years. His next opponent will be the winner between Botic van de Zandschulp and 26th seed Alejandro Davidovich Fokina.
First Set
The American started the first set lamentably, conceding an early break and squandering three break opportunities. Diallo took a 3-0 lead by being more effective on crucial points. However, Fritz managed to recover, going on a run of 12 out of the next 13 points consecutively, leveling the score at 3-3 on his serve.
Nevertheless, Diallo managed to regain momentum in the latter part of the set, responding with a break and winning the last three games consecutively and without complications, securing 12 out of the last 15 points. The Canadian had been imposing on serve, with 72% first serves in and 78% effectiveness.
Second Set
The second set remained tightly contested with both players strong on serve. Fritz reached 4-3 having conceded just two points on his serve, the same as Diallo up to that point. However, just one moment of hesitation from the Canadian world No. 40 was enough for Fritz to seize his first break opportunity and take the lead in the eighth game.
Without major issues, Fritz closed out a solid set on his serve, 6-3: he conceded only two service points (91% effectiveness) and tallied 11 aces, with only one unforced error.
Third Set
The third set maintained the tone of the second, with both players winning their service games without major opposition and no break points contested by either side. The Canadian achieved better first-serve numbers, with 81% against Fritz's 62%, but on the second serve, it was the American who made a difference in his favor, winning 62% of second-serve points against only 29% for his opponent.
Despite this, everything led to a tie-break, with no break points played. Precisely Diallo's problems with the second serve came to light at this moment in the match, and Fritz secured three consecutive mini-breaks, taking the set 7-6[7-0].
Fourth Set
More than two hours of play had already passed, and there was even a pause due to the roof closing because of weather conditions. After the break, both returned to the match, though this time with much more contested games. In the third game, Diallo capitalized on a couple of break opportunities and took the lead. Fritz threatened to break back – in the fourth game he had three opportunities and up to 24 points were played – but Diallo managed to hold his lead.
Fritz would not generate any more break chances, and Diallo clung to his serve to take the set 6-4, sending everything to a decisive fifth set. Diallo hit a remarkable 19 winners against Fritz's 12.
Fifth Set
The final moments of the match were just as tight as the previous couple of hours. Both players served powerfully, leading to short rallies. In a battle of nerves, everything remained even until 3-2 in the fifth set, when Diallo conceded the first break opportunity of the set, and Fritz converted it immediately on the return. That minimal advantage was all Fritz needed to secure the victory just minutes later. The American didn't falter on his serve, closing out the win 3-6, 6-3, 7-6(0), 4-6, 6-3 to advance to the third round.
This marks the second consecutive match where Fritz has had to go the full five sets to claim victory, showcasing a remarkable ability to maintain focus until the very end. He now awaits the winner between Alejandro Davidovich Fokina and Botic van de Zandschulp, a match that was suspended with the Spaniard leading 6-1, 4-6, 6-3, 5-5.
