Aussie No. 3 Jordan Thompson secured a notable victory in the second round of Wimbledon, standing out amidst a challenging performance from Australian and New Zealand players at the tournament. A total of 6 Oceanic players were eliminated in the first round.
Four Australian representatives remain in the men's draw, though Thompson is the only one already classified for the third round. On the women's side, the sole remaining hope is 16th seed Daria Kasatkina, who will return to the court this Thursday for her second-round match against Irina-Camelia Begu.

Jordan Thompson's gritty Win

Jordan Thompson survived a true battle against Benjamin Bonzi, coming from two sets to one down to reach the third round of Wimbledon for the second time in his career (the previous being in 2021). The world No. 44 ultimately prevailed 7-5, 6-7(2), 4-6, 6-2, 6-4, in nearly 4 hours of play.
The Australian remained solid on serve, with 75% first-serve effectiveness and a remarkable 20 aces in the match. Thompson hit an impressive 76 winners compared to his opponent's 49. The match's winner wasn't decided until the final minutes when Bonzi was serving at 4-5 to stay alive but ended up conceding a couple of break opportunities to Thompson, who converted on his second match point to seal the victory. In the third round, he will face the winner between Arthur Fery (WC) and Luciano Darderi.

Notable early exits

In the first round of the tournament—between Monday and Tuesday—six Australian representatives were eliminated, with world No. 22 Alexei Popyrin being one of the major disappointments. The 25-year-old was unable to overcome local wildcard Arthur Fery in the first round, eventually falling in four sets.
Meanwhile, Christopher O’Connell lost to veteran qualifier Adrian Mannarino (6-2, 6-4, 6-3), while James Duckworth managed to push 25th seed Felix Auger-Aliassime to a fifth set, but it was in vain as the Canadian ultimately secured the victory. Additionally, Adam Walton suffered a similar fate, losing in 5 sets to qualifier Arthur Cazaux.
The defeats of qualifiers James McCabe (6-1, 6-4, 6-3 against Fabian Marozsan) and Alex Bolt against 10th seed Ben Shelton (6-4, 7-6, 7-6) also added to the early exits.

Australians still in the hunt

While Jordan Thompson awaits his return to the courts on Friday for the third round of the tournament, three other Australians are still in contention on the men's side this Thursday. They're hoping to join Thompson among the top 32 players, though they face tough challenges—at least for two of them.
Alex Vukic, ranked world No. 93, will go up against none other than world No. 1 Jannik Sinner. Vukic overcame 23-year-old Chun Hsin Tseng in four sets, but facing Sinner will be a significantly tougher test. Meanwhile, Rinky Hijikata is set to clash with 10th seed Ben Shelton, another match where the favoritism will clearly lie with his opponent.
However, world No. 11 Alex de Minaur, Australia's top-ranked male player, carries the responsibility of securing another victory. He'll face qualifier Arthur Cazaux. De Minaur is defending his quarterfinal appearance from 2024 and arrives fresh off a convincing straight-sets win over Roberto Carballés Baena.
