Renown tennis coach
Patrick Mouratoglou believes Spanish sensation
Carlos Alcaraz should not be seen in the same light as the Big Three of
Roger Federer,
Rafael Nadal and
Novak Djokovic.
Alcaraz had a meteoric rise that saw him win two Grand Slams and become World No.1, although this coincided with the retirement of Federer in 2022 and Nadal succumbing to injuries for most of that period.
Mouratoglou doesn't believe Alcaraz should be on the same level as the Big Three
Although several fans hold Alcaraz to the same level as the Big Three, Mouratoglou doesn't think this is the case. The Frenchman claims the Big Three ear is over, adding that a new era of tennis was on the horizon.
"I don't like the idea of the Big 3 label for Alcaraz," he said on social media. "We're in a different era. There is no more a Big 3 anyway. There is Novak, who is dominating the game and then Carlos comes in with two grand slams at 20 years old and is in a position that is incredible and he shows incredible qualities.”
Furthermore, although Mouratoglou credited Djokovic and Alcaraz as the current leading players on tour, he believes there are other players capable of winning Grand Slam titles.
"To label him top Big 3, to me [it] makes no sense," he continued. "If you look at the game today, there is Novak and Carlos. Daniil who's very close, he is winning a lot. And all the others they're under. Doesn't mean that they cannot win a Grand Slam but for the moment they are under. So we cannot talk about being Big 3.
“Big 3 we’re talking about Roger, Rafa, Novak. Guys who have 20 plus Grand Slams. So to label someone in the Big 3 on the men's tour, makes no sense for me now."
