Former US Open champion
Daniil Medvedev’s agent has
confirmed that the world number three has no sponsorship contracts with any brand
or companies that are under sanctions for their role in the conflict between Russia
and Ukraine.
The two European neighbours are involved in a violent battle since
February 24, 2022, where hundreds, including civilians, have lost their lives.
Because of this conflict, The All England Club decided to
ban players from Russia and Belarus during last year’s
Wimbledon which was
criticised by both ATP and WTA. The decision was overturned this year.
However, the players representing both countries are now
required to sign a declaration of neutrality, under which they are not authorised
to receive monetary support from their state or a company that has been
sanctioned due to the war.
Medvedev’s agent Lev Kassil, while speaking to sport24.ru,
confirmed that his client has no issues in signing such a declaration form.
“If Russian tennis players are required to terminate the
agreements, then this does not threaten our clients,” he said. “They do not
have contracts with sponsors that are under sanctions.”
The 27-year-old will be hoping to overturn his fortunes in Wimbledon
after missing out last year as it is the only Grand Slam where he is yet to
play in the quarter-finals or beyond.
Medvedev’s best performance came in the 2021 edition where he lost
to Poland’s Hubert Hurkacz in the fourth round with a score of 2-6, 7-6, 3-6,
6-3, 6-3.
