Roger Federer is arguably the greatest professional tennis player of all time, but his legacy is inextricably tied to Rafael Nadal.
The duo have clashed on the ATP Tour 40 times, with Nadal leading the head to head 24-16. Regardless of the outcome, these meetings have produced classics that can be found on any fan's Top 10 matches of all time.
With the 2020
Miami Open cancelled due to the coronavirus outbreak, fans can only reminisce about past encounters between the two tennis juggernauts.
Miami 2004
However, their very first match occurred at the 2004 Miami Open, then known as the NASDAQ-100 Open. Federer was coming off his maiden Australian Open title and had just claimed the title at Indian Wells.
Conversely,
Rafael Nadal had fallen to Lleyton Hewitt in the third round at the Australian Open. Entering Miami, the 34th-ranked 17-year old was showing a lot of potential as someone who could challenge the top-ranked players.
Federer, being World No.1 at that time, had defeated Nikolay Davydenko in the second round. Awaiting him was Nadal, who led Goran Ivanisevic 6-4 before the Croat was forced to retire due to injury.
In a match that shocked everyone, the 17-year old Spaniard outplayed the World No.1, earning a 6-3 6-3 victory. Nadal would subsequently lose to Fernando Gonzalez in the fourth round, but he had announced his arrival.
Miami 2005
Federer and Nadal were on a collision course yet again as they were seeded in opposite halves of the draw at the 2005 Miami Open. The Swiss Maestro had again captured the Indian Wells title, and had dominated Tim Henman and Andre Agassi en route to the Miami final.
Nadal lost to Hewitt at the Australian Open for the second consecutive year, falling in the fourth round. However, he dropped only one set on his way to the final in Miami. The entire tennis world eagerly awaited a rematch between these two, and they were not disappointed.
Nadal raced to a two sets to love lead, and was two points away from claiming the title. However, Federer displayed his championship pedigree, fighting back to win the third set tie-breaker. He then dominated the final two sets, winning 2–6 6–7(4) 7–6(5) 6–3 6–1 in the first of many epic matches to come.
Although the two had just competed in a marathon match, both men still treated the other with respect during the post-match handshake and ceremony. There was even a hint of camaraderie between them as they joked with each other while awaiting their trophies.
Competitors? Yes. Rivals? Yes. But there was also a friendship developing, which would blossom over the next decade.
