The Monte-Carlo Masters was played without Jakub Mensik after a late withdrawal from the first Masters 1000 event on clay. In a bitter blow, he has since pulled out of the BMW Munich Open as the start of his clay swing continues to be delayed.
The Czech talent has began the year in fine fashion. Despite a plummet in the rankings, he has impressed on court. He kicked off the year by winning the ASB Classic for his second ATP title. He was forced to withdraw from an eye-catching Australian Open fourth round tie against Novak Djokovic due to an abdominal muscle injury.
He returned to the court shortly after, picking up a hugely significant victory over Jannik Sinner to reach the Qatar Open semi-final, where Arthur Fils got the better of him. The 20-year-old would then go into a hugely critical Sunshine swing where a lot of points were on offer.
Mensik bowed out in the third round of Indian Wells before his Miami Open title defence came around. He was looking to cut his losses with 1000 points set to be swiped away from his overall tally. Another third round exit saw him fall out of the top 20.
He would look to put that disappointment behind him with a fast start in the clay swing, choosing a debut campaign at the Monte-Carlo Masters as his first venture on the new surface. However, his first round tie against Fabian Marozsan would never take place.

Foot injury halting Mensik's progress

The former world number 12 shared a message on X outlining the reasons why he was unable to compete. "Sadly, I had to withdraw from Monte Carlo earlier this week because of an infection in my right foot," he wrote. "We’ve done everything possible to try and get me ready to compete, but there just hasn’t been enough time."
He then followed it up with some more concerning news. "Not the news I wanted to share, but I’ve also decided to withdraw from Munich," he confirmed. While not an easy decision, it was a sensible one. "Together with my team, we agreed that the smartest decision is to take a bit more time to recover and make sure I’m 100% for what’s coming next. Thanks for all the messages and support."
This foot injury has cost him the chance to get some more points on the board before the Madrid Open. He goes into the tournament on the back of a quarterfinal run last year, falling short against Francisco Cerundolo in a three-set thriller. He will be hopeful that the problem is not too serious and that he can get back out onto the court to continue the progress that he has made in this sport.
