Ugo Humbert is the champion at
Open 13 Provence Marseille with the Frenchman delighting on home soil in a move that will see him usurp Adrian Mannarino and return to the French No.1 spot come Monday after a five star 6-4, 6-3 win over Grigor Dimitrov.
Taking on Dimitrov who has reached most finals since Paris last year and reached another in France, Humbert proved too good in a near flawless display with an incredible variety of precision serving and rock-solid baseline play to become the seventh Frenchman to lift the title at Open 13 Provence.
The first set was dominated by serve with no break point until the 10th game. Humbert couldn't execute on his first opportunity to seal the set at 5-4 but made no mistake with his second. After saving two break points in the second set, Humbert raced ahead. He went into a 3-0 lead and never looked back.
He won 87 per cent of his first serve points and with his 84-minute victory becomes the eighth player to win his first five tour-level finals. He will now move into World No.18 as a result of his latest run and stops the rise momentarily of the current French master, the veteran Adrian Mannarino who has stolen a march in recent times.
“I’m very strong mentally in finals,” said Humbert in his on-court interview. “It was a great match against Grigor, he’s one of the best players at the moment, so it was not easy. It’s so nice to win at home again.”
“It’s here where everything began, because I reached my first semi-final on Tour [here]. It’s really nice to win Marseille, it’s a good feeling.”
