Indian Wells champion
Jannik Sinner is safely on his way through the competition after taking down
Damir Dzumhur 6-3, 6-3. It was another routine performance for the world number two who had to deal with another heckling situation. Fortunately, the staff at the
Miami Open had a ruthless way of dealing with it.
Sinner is coming off his first title in 2026 after a slightly sluggish start to his ridiculously high standards. A semi-final defeat at the Australian Open was culminated by a surprising loss to Jakub Mensik at the Qatar Open last-eight stage.
He turned those wrongs into rights with a brilliant showing in California. He charged through the competition, looking back to his best while not dropping a set enroute to the title, defeating Daniil Medvedev in the final. It was a maiden Indian Wells title, and he would be hoping to repeat that success in the second half of the Sunshine double in Miami.
Dzumhur would be the latest player to test his luck against the four-time Grand Slam champion after surviving a match point against qualifier Ignacio Buse as he completed a respectable comeback. It was a first matchup between the pair, and it went exactly how you would expect.
Heckler disrupts tennis match, but is brutally dealt with
Not for the first time this month has Sinner been teased by an obnoxious fan trying their best to disrupt proceedings. In his fourth round tie against Joao Fonseca at Indian Wells, he lost his rag with a certain individual after he would not stop calling stuff out at him. He turned and gave him a piece of his mind with the umpire even coming down to de-escalate the situation.
While it did not result in that in Florida, both players were not satisfied with one particular fan, especially the Bosnian. This caused chair umpire Renaud Lichtenstein to sort out the ordeal halfway into the second set. He had previously issued a warning to the spectators, but it seems that not everyone got the message.
Into his walkie-talkie, Lichtenstein stated: "Damir is upset with the guy with the green shirt and Jannik is telling me he's baiting on the back... I don't know what we should do. Maybe we could talk to him to relax."
It seems that the security also had enough of that individual, already having a plan in place to sort the situation out. "We've got security on the way. So... I think he's just an idiot."
The Italian would go on to wrap up victory in what seemed on paper like a routine win. He was sympathetic at the net, apologising to his opponent for the debacle earlier in the match. Sinner is looking to add a second
Miami Open title to his collection after winning in 2024. He will look to go one step closer against Corentin Moutet in the third round.
