Rafael Nadal reflects on PlayStation days and progression in Bastad Open

Spain’s legendary tennis star Rafael Nadal has opened up about playing Playstation with his friends when he was young and played in the Bastad Open. The 37-year-old is often regarded as one of the greatest players in the history of men’s tennis in the Open era, having won as many as 24 Grand Slam titles.

Nadal, who is now taking part in the Bastad Open once again, opened up about how he used to spend time with his friends playing Playstation at an early age. "When you’re 19, 18 or 17, when I first came here, I remember coming to play with friends, with Juan Monaco, Carlos Moya, Zabaleta, playing Playstation, going to dinner and partying a bit afterwards. Different things," he said. "When you’re 38, life changes a bit and you pay more attention to how nice the place is. I had even forgotten how nice the place is. The last time I was here I was only 19, so it’s a different world.”

Nadal has had a difficult season. The former world number one has struggled with fitness concerns in recent years, which forced him to stay out of action for nearly 12 months. During that time last year, Nadal announced that the 2024 season would be his last at the highest level.

The Spaniard returned to the court earlier this year, but his return was also hampered by fitness concerns. He suffered an injury during the Brisbane International, which forced him out of action for another two months, during which he also missed the Australian Open. Nadal finally returned to the court before the Barcelona Open but has failed to produce consistent positive results.

He missed the recently concluded third Grand Slam of the year to focus on playing at the Summer Olympics, which are taking place in the French capital city of Paris. Nadal is not only participating in the singles category at Bastad as in the doubles event, he, along with his partner Casper Ruud, has already booked their place in the next round after beating Miguel Ángel Reyes-Varela and Guido Andreozzi in straight sets with a score of 6-1, 6-4.
