Daniil Medvedev was feeling the heat at the 2025 US Open
Former World No.1 Daniil Medvedev saw his 2025 China Open campaign come to an end on Tuesday, although the Russian did not leave without treating fans to his trademark outburst after getting into an argument with the chair umpire.
The 2021 US Open champion faced American Learner Tien in the final four, after defeating former World No.2 Alexander Zverev in the quarterfinals. Tien had defeated Italians Flavio Cobolli and fourth seed Lorenzo Musetti en route to the semifinal, but was undoubtedly the underdog against the eighth seeded Russian.
Despite Medvedev winning the first set, he was unable to capitalize on his chances in the second set, allowing Tien to level the match. This led to a decider, where Medvedev developed cramps and soon fell to a 0-3 deficit.
Things got worse for the Russian and he looked ready to throw in the towel. However, umpire Adel Nour stepped in, accusing the former US Open champion of not giving his best effort. Subsequently, he handed Medvedev a code violation, which did not sit well with the Russian.

Medvedev lashes out at umpire, calls for supervisor

The 2020 ATP Finals champion refused to accept the code violation, demanding a supervisor be brought on court. During the interval, he confronted Nour, questioning why the umpire believed he was not trying hard enough.
"You prefer that I retire?” Medvedev said. “Say to the guys and the cameras that you prefer I retire. I’m giving my best effort so why the hell are you saying I’m not giving my best effort. Who are you to decide for me? Who are you? What’s your name?"
Medvedev would inquire why he was always the subject of fines, making reference to the $42,500 fine he received following an explosive outburst during his defeat at the US Open a few weeks ago.
"Why is every referee in the world trying to intimidate me? I didn’t say one word,” he added. “After US Open, I’m trying to be good and this guy is doing that? I’m supposed to act good? Why are you trying to intimidate me? What’s your problem with me?"
Despite his arguments, the call would stand. Medvedev would retire a few minutes later, trailing 0-4 in the final set. Therefore, Tien advances to the final, where he takes on Wimbledon champion Jannik Sinner.
