World No.1 Carlos Alcaraz won't play any part in this week's Davis Cup Finals, it has been confirmed on Monday night. The Spaniard was due to play on Thursday against the Czech Republic and has already travelled to Bologna albeit with an MRI having been done.
It was then confirmed on Monday night that he was suffering from a muscle edema (swelling) in his right thigh/hamstring area which he sustained after returning a serve in the final of the ATP Finals which he went on to lose to Jannik Sinner.
Thought he initially felt he could move and play well, Alcaraz admitted he had moments when he wondered what might happen if he attempted his usual explosive game and so his team and his entourage decided that it was best he sought medical assessment.
According to broadcaster Angel Garcia on El Partidazo on COPE, he has now made the decision to withdraw from their Davis Cup Finals tie against Czech Republic albeit who the replacement is to take on Jiri Lehecka, Jakub Mensik and co is yet to be confirmed.
“I felt something at the back, in the hamstrings, after trying to return a serve. I could say it didn’t affect me too much, to be honest, because I could run well, I could reach the balls well. Obviously, sometimes the idea came to mind how it would be if I did the crazy things I usually do, how would that be. But I could play well," said Alcaraz after losing to Sinner in the final in Turin.
Alcaraz being absent is a major blow from the team with Alejandro Davidovich Fokina in his mind at least already being snubbed from the outfit meaning they don't even have him under the guise of David Ferrer. Albeit it is also a general blow for the event with Jannik Sinner and Lorenzo Musetti already deciding this week to withdraw.
While Alexander Zverev is playing, he wasn't exactly complimentary about it discerning it from being proper now it has moved and called it an exhibition. It now puts pressure on Spain's other top players to step up in the Quarter-Finals and also gives time on the plus side for Alcaraz to recover ahead of next season.
