Alexander Zverev had to fight hard to overcome Mannarino while Wawrinka completed a stunning comeback against Rublev.
Similar to the last time Zverev and Mannarino met, this match was another long one where Zverev edged out the victory barely. The result was 7-6(11) 6-7(7) and 6-4 for Zverev who needed over three hours to dispatch off Mannarino. The first set was extremely close as the result suggests despite Zverev breaking Mannarino midway through to take the lead. The Frenchman responded immediately and broke him back to make it 4-4. Then in the tiebreak, both players had several set points before Sasha won it with 13-11. The 2nd set was pretty much identical in the sense that one player led but ultimately it was settled in a tiebreak. Mannarino led Zverev twice on separate occasions but each time the German fought back. In the end, Adrian got the victory but only in the tiebreak 9-7.
The final set was another close affair where Zverev had chances but could not string several good points together to break Mannarino. The Frenchman continued playing well until late in the set when Sasha finally found a way to break him and win the match 6-4.
The final match of the day was an interesting matchup between Rublev and Wawrinka. Stan had to play late in the evening once more and against a very tough opponent who has been in stellar form. The Russian started a bit slow in the match but as soon as he warmed up he started rolling. His aggressiveness was something Wawrinka could not match and the Russian quickly took control of the match-winning the opening set 6-1. The 2nd set was much better from Wawrinka who served much better which frustrated Rublev so much that he rushed into several errors. One of those cost him his serve and the Swiss won the 2nd set with 6-4.
A visibly annoyed Rublev entered the final set similar to the way he ended the 2nd rushing in points and committing errors. It allowed Wawrinka to break him and take the lead. The Russian calmed down a bit but Wawrinka continued playing well holding on to the lead 4-2. He continued playing well while Rublev simply could not find the right balance between aggressiveness and patience. The match ended with Wawrinka breaking Rublev once more to win the match 6-3.
