Third seed Daniil Medvedev battled back from a set deficit on Thursday to defeat rising star Alex De Minaur and advance to the quarterfinals at the
Paris Masters.
Assisted by some inconsistent play from the Russian, De Minaur was able to claim the first set after 47 minutes. However, Medvedev grew in confidence and took control of the match, prevailing with a 5-7 6-2 6-2 victory in under two hours.
“It was a really difficult first set, I wasn’t playing bad, but he was also playing well. I was up a break, but didn’t keep the momentum and he came back and was a little bit on fire,” said Medvedev in a post-match interview. “The second and third sets were the same scenario, really. I broke early in the second set and I was stronger on my serve to put a lot of pressure on him. I got more confident, knowing that I could put a bit more on my serve and started to come in.”
The World No.5 recorded his 20th match-win of the season, and he next faces sixth seed
Diego Schwartzman in the quarterfinals. The Argentine recorded a convincing 6-1 6-1 victory over Spanish qualifier Alejandro Davidovich Fokina, as he continues his quest to qualify for the Nitto ATP Finals. Schwartzman needs to reach the semifinals of the Paris Masters to have a shot at obtaining the final spot at the elite eight-man event, which is being held in London from November 15-22 2020.
”I watched his match and Diego played really well,” admitted Medvedev. “I think he made five unforced errors and was returning a lot of balls in the court. He served pretty well and it will be a really tough match, because he has been on fire this year. I am looking forward to it.”
