Four-time Grand Slam champion Naomi Osaka made an incredible comeback against Karolina Muchova to advance to the third round of the Australian Open with a 1-6, 6-1, 6-3 win. Osaka had a tough start and seemed completely overwhelmed by the talented Czech, but she regained control of the match and made a strong statement with her dominant victory.
The former world No. 1 put an end to a three-match losing streak against Muchova and proved once again that she’s ready to return to the top of the women’s tour. Can Osaka maintain this form and establish herself as a title contender?
In the first set, Muchova quickly took control of the match against a disoriented Osaka, who was constantly making errors and appeared off rhythm. Meanwhile, the Czech was on fire, taking charge and earning two consecutive breaks. In just over 20 minutes, Muchova was up 5-0.
Osaka had a slight reaction with her serve, but couldn’t do much against the confident Muchova, who hit 11 winners compared to just 4 from the Japanese player. Every time Muchova struck the backhand comfortably, she outpaced Osaka, who tried to set the pace with her forehand but left several balls in the net.
At the start of the second set, Osaka reset things and made a comeback. She improved her poor first-serve winning percentage from 45% to 80% in the second set. Just like Muchova in the first set, Osaka took two consecutive breaks and claimed the set with the same 6-1 scoreline.
A tight finish was expected, as Muchova, despite Osaka’s momentum, didn’t give up and continued to take risks at important moments. However, Osaka appeared much more energized as the games progressed. She got the first break in the fourth game, which lifted her spirits even more. Osaka remained patient, and although Muchova saved several break points easily, the moment came when Osaka, on her fifth break point of the game, took the break after an unforced error from Muchova, leading 3-2.
Unlike the first set, Osaka’s backhand was key in the final part of the match, dominating cross-court rallies and becoming her lethal weapon to outpace Muchova. Osaka faced a couple of break points against her but showed no nerves to save them and moved ahead 4-2 in a crucial moment of the match. Osaka had a break point in her favor, but a couple of unforced errors allowed Muchova to win the game as she fought to stay in the match.
In the final stretch, Osaka showcased the best of her repertoire to easily win her service games and put the pressure on Muchova. In an intense finish, Osaka completed the comeback and sealed the victory with a 1-6, 6-1, 6-3 scoreline.
In the third round, she will face former world No. 4 Belinda Bencic, who has made a stellar return to the Tour after a year-long absence due to maternity. The Swiss player has won 9 of her last 11 matches, including two victories against top-20 players: Anna Kalinskaya (14th) a week ago in Adelaide and recently against 16th seed Jelena Ostapenko.
