With no Olympics this year due to the Coronavirus outbreak, Andy Murray has the chance in his rehab from injury to potentially defend his gold medal next year in Tokyo for a third straight time so we take a look back at those triumphs.
Murray is known to many as a British hero and a player who has been heralded on the courts of Wimbledon every year since the start of his career and most of the time he has delivered.
He did again in London when the
Olympic Games came home in 2012 and with all the pressure on him, he claimed the gold.
The multiple Grand Slam champion came through a tough field at the time to claim it, he saw off Stan Wawrinka in the first round in a tough draw as third seed but came through 6-3, 6-3.
Following that Jarkko Nieminen awaited and it was plain sailing again for Murray in the form of a 6-2, 6-4 victory. Then the final two matches awaited between him and a place in the semi-finals and a potential medal.
He came from a set down to breeze past Marcos Baghdatis 4-6, 6-1, 6-4 and then eased past Nicolas Almagro, the 11th seed 6-4, 6-1 to book his place in the semi's.
There awaited the number two seed Novak Djokovic and he came through a tight 7-5, 7-5 to the delight of the crowd before setting up a clash of the titans against Roger Federer.
The number one seed taking on the home hero and fellow top player at the time and it was a three set masterclass from the latter taking it 6-2, 6-1, 6-4.
Defence in Rio
The pressure was on him but not as much four years later in Rio as he took the gold medal again. He came through his first two rounds with ease defeating Victor Troicki (6-3, 6-2) and Juan Monaco (6-3, 6-1).
He then came through mid match set losses to Fabio Fognini and Steve Johnson to win through to the semi-finals. This saw him face Kei Nishikori who at fourth seed was towards the peak of his powers but it was one step two far for the Japanese ace as he lost out 6-1, 6-4.
The big surprise though didn't come from Murray, it came from his opponent in the final Juan Martin del Potro. Competing with a protected ranking, he won all the way through to the semi-finals where he produced one of his finest displays to defeat Rafael Nadal.
The scene was set for Del Potro vs Murray and it did not disappoint. It ended up 7-5, 4-6, 6-2, 7-5 to the latter in the end with it being a real quality affair. Can he do it again next year?
