The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) has accepted a reduction in Dragoș Mădăraș’ suspension, cutting it down from over four years to just two. The Swedish player had been found guilty of violating the Tennis Anti-Corruption Program and had appealed the ITIA’s initial ruling from nearly a year ago.

The 27-year-old, who reached a career-high ranking of world No. 191 in 2023, was beginning to make his way onto the Challenger circuit and even played his first Grand Slam qualifying event at Wimbledon that year.

During the qualifying rounds, the ITIA accused Mădăraș of violating the Tennis Anti-Corruption Program (TACP) after he refused to hand over his phone to ITIA investigators when requested. Instead, the Swede gave the device to his brother Patrick, who had received tournament accreditation under the pretense of being Dragoș' hitting partner. Patrick also refused to surrender the phone before leaving the venue.

Mădăraș was provisionally suspended on 17 August 2023 for breaching cooperation rules and obtaining accreditation through false statements. He was initially banned for four and a half years, until 16 February 2028, preventing him from competing, training, or attending any tennis events organized by ITIA-affiliated bodies, including the Grand Slams, ATP, ITF, and WTA.

The Swedish player appealed to CAS, which partially upheld his request, reducing his ban to two years. While his lack of cooperation was acknowledged, the panel deemed the initial punishment disproportionate. As a result, Mădăraș will be eligible to return to competition in August this year.
