Elina Svitolina says that she doesn't want her husband Gael
Monfils to attend her matches at
Wimbledon.
Wildcard Svitolina has made it through to the semi-finals of
Wimbledon this year following a surprise victory over world No. 1
Iga Swiatek.
It was an exciting battle, with Svitolina taking the first set and Swiatek
fighting back to take the second. Ultimately though it was the Ukrainian,
currently ranked at 76 in the WTA rankings, who took the win 7-5, 6-7 (5),
6-2.
This is the second time that the 28-year-old has reached the
semi-finals at the grasscourt major, having lost to eventual champion Simona
Halep in 2019. This year, she will face
Marketa Vondrousova in her bid to make
the final at a Grand Slam for the first time.
Svitolina doesn't want her husband to attend
In the press conference after the match,
Svitolina was asked if her husband
Gael Monfils would be attending her
semi-final match. She jokingly responded that she doesn't want to jinx things
by having him there,
"I wouldn't want to change so much
the things. I'm not really superstitious, but I don't want to jinx few
things".
She went on to say that he was happy at home
with their daughter Skai, who they welcomed last October,
"He's happy at home. He's watching
from home with Skai and with my parents as well. He has his routines as well
before my match. He's also right now recovering and getting ready for the US
swing. It's okay. I let him stay at home for now."
Admits Vondrousova match will be tough
"I take one match at a time. I know that there is few matches left to
get that trophy
"Marketa, she's a tough opponent. Is going to be a tough challenge
for me. That's why I don't want to rush and think about I might be playing a
final, might not play the final."
The match will take place tomorrow, Thursday July 13.
