Ukrainian ace, Elina Svitolina has continued her stunning post pregnancy comeback by reaching the semi-finals of 2023 Wimbledon after dismantling World No.1 Iga Swiatek 7-5, 6-7, 6-2
Svitolina has come back onto the tour with a new aggressive game style which is paying dividends over the past two weeks at SW19 and after taking out a former World No.1 in Victoria Azarenka, it was the current WTA forerunner that fell.
There will be a big chance also to reach the final with Marketa Vondrousova the next opponent. She took out Jessica Pegula earlier today.
To begin the tie, it was all Swiatek who moved 5-3 up. Svitolina had groans from the crowd as their cult hero seemingly of this year's tournament was seemingly failing to back it up.
To get to this point Swiatek took it to advantage and Svitolina sliced a forehand long and Swiatek moved one away. But Svitolina produced a superb forehand winner to hold serve at 5-4 as her comeback began.
She completely turned the tables and a poor service game from Swiatek handed Svitolina the initiative. One that she didn't have to take herself with a double fault sending it to 5-5.
Swiatek looked to take it back but she miscued a forehand return and Svitolina held for 6-5.
The pressure told and a backhand volley went wide sealing Svitolina the set. Play was suspended but on return, Swiatek again started a set with the initiative going 3-1 up.
More errors crept onto her racquet making it 21 at 3-3 and Svitolina took the lead to go 4-3 up and then 5-4 up but the holds continued and Swiatek took it to a tie-break.
One that Svitolina led 4-1 and Swiatek returned to find some of her best tennis with her back against the wall snatching the set 7-5 to send it all the way.
Svitolina picked herself up though and went again. A 35th unforced error sent Svitolina to a break point and Swiatek pushed a backhand long allowing her a 2-1 lead. It was one that she held albeit from 40-0 up to having to seal it on advantage but the crowd rose again as Svitolina held a double break at 4-1.
The confidence and swagger was there as she took a 5-1 lead with back to back aces. Swiatek saw some resolve from Svitolina but eased to a service hold meaning the Ukrainian had to serve it out. She sealed it with Swiatek summing up her game careering it into the net.
