Caroline
Wozniacki is set to make a comeback to the WTA tour and she has shared her
thoughts on competing against Iga Swiatek, Aryna Sabalenka, and Elena Rybakina.
The Danish
tennis player is preparing for her return to the WTA tour after a three-year
hiatus since her retirement. Wozniacki was a former world No. 1 and the
champion of the 2018 Australian Open, where she defeated the then-world No. 1,
Simona Halep, in the final.
In June,
she announced that she would be returning to the tennis courts during the hard
court swing in the tournaments held in the United States following the
conclusion of Wimbledon:
“Over these
past three years away from the game I got to make up for lost time with my
family, I became a mother and now have two beautiful children I am so grateful
for. But I still have goals I want to accomplish. I want to show my kids that
you can pursue your dreams no matter your age or role. We decided as a family
it’s time. I’m coming back to play and I can’t wait!”
Wozniacki
will be facing top players this time around who hadn't yet established
themselves as champions by 2020. In particular, there has been talk about the
WTA Big-3, considering the dominance that Sabalenka, Rybakina, and Swiatek have
shown over the past year. The 33-year-old athlete has expressed that she is
prepared to compete against them.
“I have fought tough players before and fought
my way around so I am going to do the same this time,” she said
“Obviously
there are a lot of good players out there and it is a high level of tennis but
I played with the greatest of all time in Serena. She’s the best player I ever
played and she isn’t around anymore so that feels good to me at the moment! I
am happy not to have to play her anymore,” Wozniacki added.
Wozniacki "excited to be back"
The Danish
player said she doesn't feel pressure regarding the length of time she will
play and that it will depend on how things progress:
“I am not
putting a time on how long I will play, just see how the body holds up, see how
I feel, how the kids and everyone does."
“I am
excited to be back and excited to be playing and hopefully it will be my best
tennis yet.”
“My family
and my kids is the most important thing in my life to me so I know that if I
win or lose they won’t look at me any differently.
Wozniacki
won 32 singles titles and reached 25 finals. Her notable achievements include
the trophy at the 2018 Australian Open, six WTA 1000 titles, and a trophy at
the 2017 WTA Finals.
