Tennis commentator Myles Davis recently ruffled some feathers in the tennis community when he stated winning the Sunshine Double was more prestigious than winning the
Roland Garros trophy.
The Sunshine double refers to the
Indian Wells and
Miami Open Masters 1000 tournaments, which are held back-to-back during the season. The feat has been achieved by the likes of
Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic on the ATP Tour, whereas Steffi Graf, Victoria Azarenka and Iga Swiatek have accomplished this on the WTA circuit.
Fans take offense to outlandish statement
In a post to social media, tennis analyst Myles David suggested winning both titles in the same year was more prestigious than capturing the Roland Garros title, which is one of the four Grand Slam tournaments.
"Some days I’d even argue that winning Indian Wells or Miami is actually more prestigious and leads to more off court opportunities than winning Roland Garros. Which is an actual GRAND SLAM tournament," David posted on Twitter.
Fans were quick to voice their displeasure at this statement, arguing that the act of winning a Major trophy could not be overshadowed by the Sunshine Double.
"Imagine thinking that it was IW and Miami , not winning RG that gave all the opportunities to Rafael Nadal," responded one fan.
"Americans are actually insane. you honestly think that a tournament played in a football stadium is more prestigious than the French open? Crazy stuff," wrote another fan.
"I'd argue you need to get out of the house more often," said an upset fan.
"American tennis people will take their 1 square mile of reality and assume that that's how the other 8 billion people in the world think. Not realizing that local realities are influenced by the tournaments that are precisely PLAYED THERE," said another fan.
"Perhaps in America, but I wouldn't say that for the rest of the world," stated a fan.
