5-time Grand Slam Champion and former world number 1, Maria Sharapova announced her retirement from professional tennis.

Sharapova was one of the most successful tennis players in history. She climber the top of the WTA ranking on the 22nd of August 2005 and managed to win 5 Grand Slam titles. One on each of the Grand Slam tournaments and twice at the French Open.
However, in recent years she had problems with injuries and did not come back to TOP 10 since 2015. In 2019, the Russian played only 15 matches, losing 7 of those and in 2020 she lost in both of her appearances.
Sharapova announced her retirement in a video and interview for Vogue. The 32 years old Russian said:
"I’m new to this, so please forgive me. Tennis—I’m saying goodbye," Sharapova started.
"Tennis showed me the world—and it showed me what I was made of. It’s how I tested myself and how I measured my growth. And so in whatever I might choose for my next chapter, my next mountain, I’ll still be pushing. I’ll still be climbing. I’ll still be growing."
