Mirra Andreeva captured the hearts of many during her
Wimbledon run with her superb playing style and also endearing personality as she fell to Madison Keys 6-3, 6-7, 2-6 and so nearly reaching the Quarter-Finals of Wimbledon.
But another facet to the 16-year-old's rise has been her idolising Andy Murray who has been intertwined with the Andreeva story especially while she is in the UK, where he is seen as a hero.
Andreeva previously said Murray had a 'beautiful face' with the former World No.1 jesting that she needs her eyes testing.
She spoke before she played Keys and said she had met him but was too shy to say hello and that saga could continue until at least the US Open.
"Maybe. Now I guess I won’t see him here. But maybe in US Open. If I see him, maybe. It depends. We will see. But for now I don’t think I’ll be ready. Maybe in a couple months I’ll be ready to say ‘hello’," she said in her post match press conference.
No doubt with the rise of the 16-year-old, the social media content from the US Open team will now feature a When Mirra met Andy video capturing the moment or with Andreeva being followed for Break Point, it may feature on a future episode.
On contentious point penalty
She also touched upon the point penalty which was a contentious issue and one that many sided with Andreeva on.
"I don’t know which decision was right, but she’s the umpire & the 1 who makes the decision. I didn’t have any intention to throw it. I slid & thought I’d fall forward. Maybe it looked like I threw it, I don’t know. I didn’t see a video yet."
But she was conclusive on the prior point penalty which was not seen on the BBC coverage. "I deserved it. I threw the racquet & it’s grass. I led the score by a lot. I was a bit frustrated.. I can’t say anything. She was right to give a warning. I didn’t complain or talk to her about it. She made the right decision."
