Rafael Nadal is one player in particular missing from the 2023 US Open, with likely only one more year of the great Spaniard left. He could yet start training again before the year is out ahead of the Australian Open.
That is if his medical check-up this week has gone well. Nadal has arrived in Barcelona for a follow up with his doctor on his recovery, with the step of arthroscopic surgery taken on his injured hip flexor in June.
Missing the whole season since the Australian Open, he suggested that he would retire in 2024 after many failed comeback attempts heading towards Wimbledon.
Since then though, the news has been overwhelmingly positive with friends of the great Spaniard including Juan Monaco even believing that if his comeback goes well, there is nothing stopping him from continuing to play.
Albeit there have been some airing concerns with a video in the gym showing Nadal seemingly putting on weight and with a lack of movement. But all fingers will now be crossed.
David Ferrer even who captains the Davis Cup team said his return could come at November's Finals so before 2024, he said he'd vowed to play if they qualify. “Yes, but he wants to play the Davis Cup final this year," Ferrer said. "First we have to qualify, of course, but for me it would be incredible. What I want to know is how he is, because he is a friend of mine. And then comes the Davis Cup.”
