With the 2024 US Open less than one week away, several superstars have made their intentions known regarding their participation at the final Grand Slam of the season.
Although Novak Djokovic and Coco Gauff will attempt to defend their titles from last year, they will face some stiff opposition from the likes of Carlos Alcaraz, Jannik Sinner, Iga Swiatek and Aryna Sabalenka. However, the field will be lacking some star power due to the absence of some key players at this year's event.

Nadal headlines list of absentees

1. Rafael Nadal
The four-time US Open champion has competed in just seven tournaments this year due to injury setbacks. After his final appearance at the Paris Olympic games, Nadal pulled out of the US Open and will instead focus on the Laver Cup in September.
2. Simona Halep
The former World No.1 has barely played since her four-year suspension was reduced to nine months. Halep lost in the first round at the Miami Open in March and has been sidelined by a knee injury since May.
3. Nick Kyrgios
The Aussie star has played just one singles match since October 2022, having been plagued by knee and wrist injuries. However, Kyrios announced he will be making a comeback at the Ultimate Tennis Showdown exhibition tournament this week.
4. Kei Nishikori
The 2014 US Open finalist has struggled with injuries over the past few years, and will not receive a main draw entry due to his injury-protected ranking running out. The Japanese star reached the quarterfinals at the Canadian Open two weeks ago, and will compete at two Challenger events during the US Open.
5. Marketa Vondrousova
The 2023 Wimbledon champion struggled to return from injury after falling during a match at the Berlin Open earlier this summer. Vondrousova pulled out of the Olympics with a hand injury and has since withdrawn from the US Open.
6. Milos Raonic
The Canadian finished runner-up at Wimbledon in 2016, but has dealt with injuries over the past few years. Raonic missed the Masters tournament in Montreal, and has withdrawn from the qualifying rounds at Flushing Meadows.
7. Cameron Norrie
The British star sustained an arm injury, forcing him to withdraw from his Olympics match a few hours before it was scheduled to begin. After also pulling out from the Cincinnati Open, Norrie announced his withdrawal from the US Open due to injury.
