Mirra Andreeva has said she is 'excited' to take on world No. 6
Coco Gauff in the second round of the
US Open.
16-year-old Andreeva first came to the attention of tennis fans when she made it to the fourth round of
Wimbledon last month. Along the way, the Russian moved past tenth seed Barbora Krejcikova and defeated twenty-second seed Anastasia Potapova.
Now, she is hoping to repeat her success at this year's US Open, but in order to do so she will have to get past sixth seed and home favorite Gauff in the second round.
Andreeva thrilled to play on Arthur Ashe
Andreeva defeated qualifier Olivia Gadecki in the opening round of the New York major, performing an impressive comeback after only managing to get one game on the board in the first set. The young player showed her resilience to get back in the match and ultimately won it 1-6, 6-3, 6-4.
Now, she will play her next match on Arthur Ashe, the tournament's main court. Although the crowd will be firmly behind her American opponent, Andreeva said she is excited to be playing on the Slam's biggest stage.
"I'm pretty excited about this match. I will be super excited to play on Arthur Ashe," she said.
Andreeva wants revenge for French Open defeat
Moreover, Andreeva stated that she would be motivated against Gauff due to her desire for 'revenge' against the 19-year-old for knocking her out of the
Roland Garros earlier this year.
The teenagers met in the third round, where Andreeva started well by winning the tiebreak in the first set. However, Gauff showed her fighting spirit and dominated the next two sets, winning 6-7 (5), 6-1, 6-1.
Andreeva also discussed her recent improvements in terms of results, saying she hopes to stay on this positive path.
"I hope it's going to be a good match. I'm pretty excited things are happening for me now so I hope nothing will change in the future," she said.
