Tennis fans
reacted with surprise to the cancellation of the Netflix series 'Break Point'
after two seasons and declining viewership. The series was conceived in 2022
following the success of the documentary series 'Drive to Survive,' which
follows Formula 1.
The same
producers were hired to cover the ATP and WTA Tour, offering an insider's look
for fans. The first part premiered in January 2023, just days before the
Australian Open, and followed several players throughout the previous season.
One of the
issues with the series was the absence of the biggest stars from both tours,
leaving fans wanting a closer look at players like Novak Djokovic, Rafael
Nadal, Carlos Alcaraz, Iga Swiatek, Elena Rybakina, and others.
The first
season featured Matteo Berrettini, Alja Tomljanovic, Nick Kyrgios, Stefanos
Tsitsipas, Paula Badosa, and Ons Jabeur, among others. The second part
premiered in June of the same year.
In the
second season, Alexander Zverev, Taylor Fritz, Tommy Paul, Aryna Sabalenka, and
Maria Sakkari were added to enhance the documentary's appeal, but it still
wasn't enough to captivate fans. This led to Netflix's decision to halt the
production of 'Break Point' after two seasons, sparking reactions from
disappointed fans:
Many
expressed their disappointment, although some also acknowledged that the
cancellation was not a surprise, as the series was never well-received in light
of fans' expectations:
