Stefanos Tsitsipas has confessed that his match against
Rafael Nadal in the quarter-finals of the 2021
Australian Open was the toughest of his career so far.
World No. 7 Tsitsipas is preparing to compete at the
US Open, which starts today, Monday, August 28. The Greek player will face 2016 Wimbledon finalist
Milos Raonic in the opening round.
Ahead of participating in the last Grand Slam of the season in New York, Tsitsipas took part in a question and answer session on Reddit, where fans asked him about everything from his biggest supporter to his relationship with Spanish tennis player
Paula Badosa.
Tsitsipas says Nadal match was most challenging
One Reddit user asked the 25-year-old:
"What's the toughest match physically you've been a part of?"
Tsitsipas replied by saying it was his match against Nadal in Australia, where he had to come back from 2 sets to 0 against the 22-time Grand Slam champion and take the match to five sets in order to progress through to the semi-finals.
"Coming back from 0-2 down against Rafael Nadal at the Australian Open," he responded.
Tsitsipas fought back to win the match against Nadal 3-6, 2-6, 7-6, 6-4, 7-5. He then lost to fourth seed Daniil Medvedev in the semi-finals but managed to finish as runner-up to Novak Djokovic at this year's Australian Open.
He will be hoping for a similarly successful run at the US Open, after having never got past the third round of the Slam in the past.
