Jessica Pegula has revealed that she and doubles partner
Coco Gauff will "rethink" the continuation of their pairing after the 2024 Paris
Olympic Games.
Both players have had hugely successful seasons in both singles and doubles. Together, they won the Qatar Open and the Miami Open before reaching the final at the Madrid Open.
Meanwhile, in singles, Pegula achieved success at the WTA 1000 Canadian Open in August, while Gauff won her first Grand Slam title at the US Open. This meant that both players qualified in singles and doubles for the 2023
WTA Finals in Cancun, where they are currently competing.
Pegula says post-Olympics future is unclear
Speaking to Tennis Channel after her win against Maria Sakkari on Thursday, November 2, which saw her qualify for the semi-finals, Pegula addressed the future of her and Gauff's doubles partnership, saying that they both wanted to focus more on their singles careers.
"Especially with Coco winning US Open, you know, I'm sure she's set on really doing well at the Slams, so we'll see," she said.
However, the 29-year-old added that they definitely wanted to continue until the Paris Olympics and after that the duo would "rethink" their future together.
"We definitely want to play Olympics next year. I think so, maybe once we get past that we'll rethink about it but yeah. It's just gonna happen, so maybe.
"I played like 120 matches like combined with everything. And so yeah next year, I think Coco and I will probably play less doubles. We want to try and focus on singles," she continued.
Pegula also shared the origins of their doubles pairing, revealing that it just happened due to the fact that they were at the same events a lot.
"Again, it didn't mean to happen like that. Like we just kind of both started winning [...] both at the same time and we were all playing the same events so at the time, we're like okay let's just play, and we kept winning," she explained.
