Following her victory at the
US Open,
Coco Gauff has revealed that she is aware of trash-talking against her on Tennis Twitter.
Sixth seed Gauff soared to victory on home soil at Flushing Meadows. The American was solid throughout her run at the tournament, ousting fellow teen sensation Mirra Andreeva, thirty-second seed Elise Mertens, former World No. 1 Caroline Wozniacki, twentieth seed Jelena Ostapenko, and tenth seed Karolina Muchova on her way to her debut US Open final.
There, she faced second seed and Australian Open champion Aryna Sabalenka. Although the Belarusian won the first set comfortably, Gauff fought back to take the next two and win the match 2-6, 6-3, 6-2.
Gauff calls out haters
In her post-match press conference, Gauff talked about those trash-talking her online. Specifically, the 19-year-old hit back at those claiming she had already hit her peak in the sport and was 'done.'
"I just felt like people were like 'oh, she's hit her peak and she's done and it was all hype."
Gauff also suggested that she was more aware of Tennis Twitter, now re-named X, than people might think.
"People think I don’t see, but I see, I’m very aware of Tennis Twitter," she continued before jokingly adding, "I know y’all’s usernames. I know who’s talking trash. I can’t wait to look on Twitter right now."
A star in the sport from an early age
Gauff burst onto the scene at just 15 years old when she ousted Venus Williams in the first round of the 2019 US Open. At the time, many were excited about what the future would have in store for the young player.
In 2022, Gauff made the final of the French Open, although she lost to Iga Swiatek in straight sets.
This year, Gauff faced some disappointment, such as being defeated by Sofia Kenin in the opening round of
Wimbledon. However, she was back on form for the North American swing, winning both the WTA 500 DC Open and the WTA 1000 Cincinnati Open ahead of the New York Grand Slam.
