The BNP
Paribas Open
Indian Wells has confirmed players such as
Dominic Thiem, Sofia
Kenin,
Wu Yibing and
Brandon Holt as some of the tournament's wild cards.
Indian
Wells is just a few days away from starting and the organization has confirmed
the 13 men and women who received a wild card to be part of the main draw.
Among them are two former Grand Slam champions: Dominic Thiem and
Sofia Kenin,
but also several young stars who will seek to surprise the public in
California.
The
Austrian player has not been able to return to his top form since facing
several injuries that prevented him from playing regularly. In the South
American tour, he did not achieve the expected results, losing in the second
round of the Argentina Open against the Peruvian Juan Pablo Varillas and then
against the Chilean Christian Garin in the Santiago Open.
The case of
the American is similar, as injuries caused her ranking to drop, and she is
currently ranked No. 149 in the world. Since the last Australian Open, she has
a record of 1-4 and will seek to earn points in Indian Wells that will help her
advance in the WTA rankings.
On the
men's side, 23-year-old Wu Yibing is also noteworthy, being the first Chinese
tennis player to win an ATP tournament in his great week at the Dallas Open
with victories over renowned tour players like Shapovalov, Taylor Fritz, and
John Isner. 24-year-old Brandon Holt, son of former world No. 1 Tracy Austin
and currently ranked No. 195 in the world, is also participating.
Young Katie
Volynets is another player who has had good tournaments and, at 21 years old,
is expected to break out during this season, so receiving the wild card could
help her earn points that allow her to access higher category tournaments.
