The China
Open will have one of the largest prize money amounts in the history of the
WTA
and
ATP.
The 2023
edition of the
China Open marks the tour's return to the Asian country after a
16-month ban following the disappearance of tennis player Peng Shuai, who
accused a Chinese politician of sexual assault and vanished from the public
eye.
This year,
it was announced that tennis would return to China with an ATP 500 event from
September 30th to October 8th, and a WTA 1000 event from September 28th to
October 4th, both in Beijing.
The prize
money will amount to nearly $8 million for women and $3.6 million for men,
making it one of the highest prize pools for events of the same level. The WTA
winner will receive $1.5 million, the highest prize in tennis for any event,
while the ATP champion will receive $650,000.
The event
recently confirmed the participation of
Carlos Alcaraz, and it is likely to
attract the world's top tennis players, considering its position in the Asian
tour and the substantial prize money offered. After a four-year hiatus, the
China Open promises to be a highly anticipated tournament.
